Wildlife from Maspalomas Dunes, Gran Canaria

SAM 2855

In November I visited the island of Gran Canaria for some winter sun. I have uploaded a small selection of wildlife photographs from my visit onto my Picasa web album. Without a doubt the Thistle Mantis (Blepharopsis mendica) shown above, and its amazing ability to blend into the bushes on which it hunts, was a highlight find.

My Google Picasa web album can be accessed here.

Revised Wetland Map for County Cavan

A revised map of wetlands (both known and potential wetland sites) in County Cavan has been compiled based on wetland sites reported in published sources, and previously unknown sites located through an aerial photographic analysis combined with sub soils data.

This project undertaken by Wetland Surveys Ireland has located 694 wetland sites in the county. Prior to this research project only 78 wetland sites had been recognised within the county.

The majority of the sites have little associated information on the wetland habitats that are likely to occur on the areas identified. A full county wetland survey, to build on the Cavan Wetland survey undertaken in 2008 is required to address this information deficit.

The Wetland Map of Ireland now displays a total of 6,150 sites nationally.
